Graduate School Of Natural And Applied Sciences Master of Science Programme in Biology

Qualification Awarded

The Master´s Degree in Biology program is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements

Science degree in Bachelor and ALES (numeric) score which is determined by the Senate of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University is required. Students must have minimum score determined by Senate in UDS, TOEFL, TOEFL or equivalent examinations accepted by YÖK.

Qualification Requirements

The proficiency profile of the Master Science programe is as follows: The higher education level QF-EHEA: 2nd level. The higher education level EQF-LLL: 7th level. The proficiency level of higher education is at the 7th level and the license is 90-120 ECTS. 1 ECTS = 30 is hours. Graduation ECTS (Master) must be 90-120 and must defence a thesis in front of a selected jury.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is at the beginning stage in the Turkish Higher Education System. Muğla Sitki Kocman University and hence the all department is no exception to this.

History

Since 1996-1997, master's degree programme has been taking graduate students.

Profile of the Programme

The objective is to educate specialists who can do research in any specific issues related to biology resources, plan an experimental study in the laboratory, evaluate and present a report of implement experimental results and work in scientific research and development organization.

Program Outcomes

1- Be able to examine and interpret the literature on a chosen topic
2- Be able to use and define equipments at the theoretical level on related field
3- Be able to use all source in responding to a scientific problem and to learn the specifics of scientific research
4- Be able to apply scientific method to all questions and hypothesis-based research projects on related subject
5- Be able to use oral and written presentation techniques in the evaluation of scientific data within the framework of scientific rules
6- Be able to apply the proper statistical analysis to the experimental results
7- Be able to interpret and evaluate data by using knowledge and skills in biology and develop evidence-based solutions to actual issues
8- To follow the information and to communicate other colleagues using at least European Language Portfolio B1 level
9- To use computer software and information and communication technologies required in field with at the advanced level of European Computer Driving Licence
10- Be able to prepare scientific articles in which experimental results are given in a standard format
11- Be able to obtain sufficient experience and discipline required in the laboratory and field
12- Be able to adapt biological technologies to the problems of education, industry, agriculture, health and environment
13- Be able to incorporate into interdisciplinary work
14- Be able to raise awareness about new and emerging applications of related field and to learn this applications when its needed
15- To follow new approaches and applications and be able to communicate with colleagues.
16- To organize activities and projects on related field

Exam Regulations & Assesment & Grading

Students are required to take a mid-term examination and/or complete other assigned projects/homework during the semester and, additionally, are required to take a final examination and/or complete a final project for course evaluation. The final grade is based on the mid-term examination grade, the final examination grade and/or evaluation of final project, with the contributions of 40% and 60%, respectively. To pass any course, a Master's student must receive at least 70 out of 100. Students must repeat courses they have failed or may substitute courses the Department accepts as equivalent. The assessment for each course is described in detail in “Individual Course Description”.

Graduation Requirements

The graduate program students throughout their education a total of 21 (90 ECTS) is not less than a minimum of seven courses, a seminar and thesis work must succeed. The students of Biology Program who meet the relevant requirements are awarded an MS degree.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

The graduates may work in the government; in related departments of universities to conduct scientific research and educational activities as a faculty member, a research assistant or a specialist, in research institutes, museums of natural history, botanic gardens, arboretums, national parks, water product plants, marine sciences research institutes, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, Turkish Standards Institution, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Forestry and Hydraulic Works, The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), zoos, treatment plants, customs control center and laboratory animals research labs. The graduates can work as teachers in private schools or schools under the regulation of The Ministry of National Education after meeting the qualifications of The Ministry of National Education. The graduates can work in pharmaceutical and medical companies, biotechnology firms, medical laboratories and food control laboratories in the private sector.

Access to Further Studies

Candidates who successfully completed undergraduate can enter the MSc programs with the condition of minimum required scores from the ALES and from the English language (UDS, TOEFL, IELTS, KPDS, etc.) exams.
