Graduate School Of Natural And Applied Sciences Master of Science Programme in Fisheries

Qualification Awarded

Students who take program courses and who successfully complete at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.00 are eligible for the master degree in Fisheries Engineering.

Specific Admission Requirements

To have a bachelor's degree from international faculties or colleges which are accepted as equivalent by the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK), have at least 55 standard points from ALES or at least one equivalent from one of the exams accepted by the Interuniversary Council. In the application conditions of the applied department, they must provide the foreign language achievement score determined by the Senate, they must meet the additional conditions determined by the Senate and approved by the EABDK / EASDK and EK.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum Graduation ECTS Total must be 120 and the thesis work must be defended against a selected jury.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

History

Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Fisheries Faculty was established by Law No. 3837 in July 3, 1992. First student intake began in the academic year 2004-2005 with the enrollment of 41 students and then, first graduation ceremony was in 2008. Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Fisheries Faculty, consists of three main departments including Marine and Inland Water Sciences, Aquaculture, Fishing and Fish Processing Technology; however, students only got “Fisheries Engineering” diploma after graduation. Today, our faculty goes on its missions with 7 proffessor, 10 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, 12 research assistants and 8 administrative staff in newly established building.

Profile of the Programme

To graduate fisheries master degree engineer according to universal standards, to carry out international researches and publish scientific manuscripts.

Program Outcomes

1- To describe sea-lagoon, wetland and inland waters, to recognize and classify the organisms live in those environments, to know biology, behavior and population structures of aquatic organisms, to have a sufficient knowledge and defense for sustainable management of the resources, to have awareness of conservation.
2- To have scientific awareness for investigating of geographical distribution of aquatic organisms and their relationships with other organisms and with environmental elements; for investigating of the effects of industrial and domestic negations upon aquatic organisms, and to define ecological problems and to find solutions with describe of ecotoxicologic, microbiologic and chemical norms.
3- To have sufficient projection knowledge for establishment of an aquaculture facility and to have ability to make projects of aquaculture facilities, and to take role for implementation of the projects.
4- To know the position and the importance of aquatic products in human diet, and to have ability to explain it basically to the consumers. To have ability to take task in procedures of processing, packing, transportation under the requirements of cold chain, storage and marketing of aquatic organisms. To know and apply the quality standards to serve the aquatic products to consumers.
5- To work in laboratories involved with aquatic organisms, and to evaluate the results of laboratory researches and to take measures if required. To make or get other laboratories make water analysis, to interpret the results in aspect of hydrobiology.
6- To have basic knowledge about national and international legislations applied to aquaculture and fishery area, to know legislation authorities and stakeholders, to distinguish whom to apply in official correspondences and to use legislations correctly in correspondences. To have ability to follow changes in legislations and to know how to apply it in different conditions.
7- To know economy, robustness and sustainability which are the basics of aquaculture and fisheries, to follow improvements in the area and to contribute them to implement. To do market research, to interpret economical and socio-economical indicators in aquaculture and fisheries.
8- To know basic stages of aquaculture (i.e. hatchery, grow, biotechnological applications, transportation of live fish, new species), to distinguish the stages when differentiate in aspect of species, to prepare appropriate fish feed rations and to know its technology. To monitor and interpret growth performance of the cultured species, to have knowledge about environmental effects of aquaculture facilities. To know the subjects of diagnosis and treatment on the diseases of aquatic organisms.
9- To know and implement the organization, production planning, human resources management and control strategies. To analyze the problems on management and to decide rapidly and correctly.
10- To know project cycle management and logical frame approach. To analyze actual situation of the region in respect of aquaculture and fisheries. To make projection for the future by define opportunities and threats.
11- To have knowledge on fishing techniques and technology. To have basic knowledge on maps and geographical information system.
12- To use computer and internet basically, and to follow professional publications, to use the terminology of aquaculture and fisheries area, and to apply basic statistics, to make researches and experiments on the subject. To have ability to give a seminar on a subject, to write and discuss reports and articles.
13- To have basic knowledge on diving and sailing theoretically.
14- To know humanity and ethos, to have awareness of professional ethics. To know and defend the rights of employers, and to take initiative, to have self confidence.

Exam Regulations & Assesment & Grading

It consists of exams, mid-term and final exams. In order for the student to take the final exam; at least 70% of theoretical courses and at least 80% of laboratory and applications. Exams; written, oral, written-applied and oral-applied. For each course, at least one midterm exam is held in the related semester. The mid-term and final grade grades are decided by EYK at the beginning of each semester with the recommendation of the instructors who have the doctoral degree determined by the Senate. In order to be successful in a course, the final grade must be at least CC for the master's degree. The following scoring system is applied in the evaluation of these exams: SCORE SEMESTER GRADUATE COURSE 90-100 AA 4,00 85-8 BA 3,50 80-84 BB 3,00 75-79 CB 2,50 70-74 CC 2,00 65-69 DC 1,50 60-64 DD 1,00 50-59 FD 0,50 00-49 FF 0 (TT) grade is appreciated by the instructor for the students who fail to fulfill the attendance requirements or fail to fulfill the requirements for the course. (TT) grade, the grade point average (FF) will be processed in the account. (GG) grade is given to the students who have successfully completed their thesis studies. (GG) grade is also given to courses that are taken as non-credit. This note is given for the seminar, specialty course and thesis advisory courses. (KK) grade is given to students who cannot continue their thesis studies successfully. (KK) grade is also given to courses which are taken as non-credit and failed. This note is given for the seminar, specialty course and thesis advisory courses.

Graduation Requirements

Graduate program students are required to have at least seven elective courses, Seminar and Thesis Study courses provided that they receive a total of 120 ECTS credits. Students who fulfill the related requirements are awarded a Master's Degree in Fisheries Sciences.

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Master Degree are eligible to apply to PHD degree programmes provided that a valid point of ALES examination and a sufficient level of foreign language knowledge.
