Ortaca Vocational School Programme of Fish Farming

Qualification Awarded

Those who successfully complete the program are entitled to receive the degree of Aquaculture Technician

Specific Admission Requirements

Candidates must have high school diploma or equivalent education and must have obtained the required score in the university selection test.

Qualification Requirements

For graduation, it is required to pass all courses in the programme (120 ECTS), have a GPA of at least 2.00 and complete succesfully 60 work-day internship in agricultural firms.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students studying in the Aquaculture Program may be exempt from certain courses within the framework of certain regulations. If the content of the course taken at another institution is in accordance with the content of the course given in the Aquaculture Program and it is approved by the relevant faculty/institute/school directorate, the student may be exempted from this course.

History

Founded in 2015, the Aquaculture Program took 13 students in the 2015-2016 academic year.

Profile of the Programme

In the aquaculture sector; It is a two-year program that aims to train qualified intermediate staff who can communicate effectively by making use of today's technologies, and who can do breeding, hunting, marketing, personnel management in accordance with their technique.

Program Outcomes

1- To have the knowledge and skills in a field based on the competencies gained in general or vocational secondary education and supported by courses above the secondary education level and application tools and materials and to demonstrate that they understand the basic concepts in the aquaculture program.
2- To gain knowledge about the interactions of living things with each other and with their environment, the relations of aquaculture with other branches of science, the important environmental components and the connection between environmental factors and to use this information,
3- To learn the biological, anatomical and physiological characteristics of fish, which are the main source of aquaculture, and how to use them professionally and to have information about the fish found in the waters of our country,
4- To be able to effectively identify, collect, use and evaluate the data necessary for the recognition, efficient use of water, which is one of the most important resources in the aquaculture program, and to solve the problems that may be encountered during production,
5- Objectively evaluate and supervise the operations and/or parts thereof under its responsibility, their installation, the systems to be used, and the performance of the employees who will carry out this system,
6- To show that they have gained the ability to identify problems in fish farming and health and to search for solutions, to gain the ability to put the acquired knowledge into practice,
7- To gain knowledge and skills about feeds, types, production techniques, nutritional characteristics and techniques of fish,
8- To gain knowledge and skills in the design, planning and organization of processing facilities as well as the preservation, processing, cold chain transportation and quality control of fish,
9- To be able to clearly explain the designs and applications related to the aquaculture program to colleagues, superiors and the people and groups they serve and to be able to work in a team

Exam Regulations & Assesment & Grading

40% of mid-term activities (Midterm exam, Final exam, Quiz, Oral exam, Report, Project, Presentation) 60% of semester-end activities (Final exam, Oral exam, Report, Project) are evaluated.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate, students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00/4.00 and have to take 120 ECTS credits.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of the Aquaculture Program can be employed in fish farms, fish feed production enterprises, aquarium fish production enterprises, aquarium fish sales enterprises, aquaculture processing plants, aquaculture marketing and sales companies, aquaculture consultancy companies, drinking water producing factories, aquaculture machinery-equipment and equipment producing companies and public aquariums.

Access to Further Studies

Students who graduate from this program can apply for undergraduate programs (Faculty of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture) provided that they get a valid grade from the DGS exam.
