Specific Admission Requirements

Candidates for application to graduate program must; a) Have a bachelor's degree from Turkish or foreign faculties or colleges which are approved by the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK), b) Have at least 55 points from ALES or an equivalent point from one of the exams accepted by the Interuniversitary Institute.

Qualification Requirements

In order to achieve sufficiency in the program, students must successfully complete all the courses (Z/S) enrolled in the program (120 ECTS credits), pass the thesis study and the courses they have taken during the thesis period and successfully defend their theses, as minimum qualification criteria for the program.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Candidates who have graduated from the Art History or other departments of the universities can apply to the master program provided that they have a minimum GPA of 2.40. Students coming from outside the Art History departments must pass the scientific preparation process. Issues in relation to the lateral transfer are based on the 8th Article of the Regulation on Graduate Education.

History

The Department of Archeology and Art History was established in 1993 to include the disciplines of Archaeology and Art History within the Faculty of Science and Letters. The Department of Art History was established in 2012. In the academic year of 2013-2014 our department started to provide undergraduate education. The Master Degree education is provided since the academic year of 2019-2020.

Profile of the Programme

The Art History Master Degree Program examines the material cultural designs of which history has emerged. While examining the change, formation, function and logic of visual arts, it aims to be found by making agreement on art by making comments on artists and works. One of the ultimate objectives of our Master Degree Program is to understand the historical periods and basic knowledge of Byzantine, Turkish-Islamic and European arts and their relations with other cultural circles and to understand and exchange their influence. gain the skills and methods of researching, examining, documenting, evaluating, interpreting, presenting the unknowns in the history of art. Art is the upbringing of historians.

Program Outcomes

1- Has the basic information of Art History and uses this information.
2- Distinguishes the period, style and chronology problems of the work he sees in the light of the knowledge he has acquired in the History of Art.
3- While working and researching on basic subjects such as architecture, plastics, painting, sculpture, ceramics, she establishes relations with the disciplines of History, Archeology, Architecture, Ancient Languages and Cultures, Theology, Anthropology, Philosophy and Sociology.
4- Evaluates works of art by taking into account the geography, period and dominant thought styles of the cultures they belong to.
5- Knows the changes that civilizations have undergone in the historical process and interprets their effects on artworks.
6- Documents, interprets and analyzes systematically the artworks.
7- Having sufficient knowledge about the art of different time periods and geographies, he/she comments on the region and period culture, intellectual and political events through art products.
8- Recognizes and evaluates the structures and finds of the relevant period in scientific excavations or salvage excavations made by museums, by carrying the knowledge of Art History to a practical platform in their future careers.
9- Takes care of the historical and cultural heritage of Anatolia, adopts, protects and promotes this heritage.
10- Follows and uses the techniques and modern tools necessary for Art History research.
11- Has the competence to provide research and consultancy services in harmony with science and technology with the thinking skills and professional ethical awareness that will contribute to the science of Art History.
12- Applies the scientific approach it has acquired for the protection and restoration of cultural assets in line with contemporary requirements.
13- Sanat Tarihi alanında sosyal ve kültürel hakların evrenselliğini destekler, sosyal adalet bilinci kazanır, tarihi ve kültürel mirasa sahip çıkar.
14- Uses the heoretical and applied knowledge gained in the field of Art History.

Exam Regulations & Assesment & Grading

Student are evaluated and graded according to 11th article of the Regulation on Graduate Education at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University. The examination is performed as mid-term, final and make-up exams. In order for the student to take the final exam he/she must have attended at least 70% of the theoretical courses. The examimation is performed in written, oral, written-applied and oral-applied methods. For each course, at least one midterm exam is held in the related semester. In order to be successful in a course, the final grade must be at least CC.

Graduation Requirements

The normal duration of the program is 2 years. In order to graduate from the master program, student are required to complete at least seven courses, one seminar an done thesis study. The course on specialized field, seminar and the thesis study are courses with credit and are graded as successful (GG) or unsuccessful (KK). The student who succeed chooses the thesis advisor. Afterwards, the student writes his/her thesis in accordance with the “Thesis Writing Guide” and submits at least one printed and one electronical copy at least one month before the date of the thesis defense. The student who successfully passed the thesis defense is entitled to graduate.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Employment Opportunities for the Graduates: the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Monuments and Museums, Conservation Board Directorates, State Museums, Private Museums, specialist, consultant or researcher in institutions like DÖSİM, researcher in universities.

Access to Further Studies

Students who completed the graduate program can study for their PhD degree in accordance with the regulations ofthe Turkish Higher Education on Higher Education. Admission to the PhD program is determined within the framework of the Regulation of the Institute of Social Sciences of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University on Higher Education.
