Qualification Awarded

The Master's Degree in English Language and Literature (second cycle in English Language and Literature) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements

Students who have a bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature or an equivalent degree (English Linguistics, English Translation and Interpreting, American Culture and Literature, English Language Teaching and Comparative Literature taught in English). A minimum score of 65 points from ALES exam, a minimum score of 85 points from foreign language exam (YDS, YÖKDİL and national and international foreign language exams accepted as equivalent by ÖSYM) and an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 is required.

Qualification Requirements

In order to qualify for the program, students are required to achieve the minimum level of program qualifications, successfully complete all of the courses (R/E), seminars, specialization courses (equivalent to 120 ECTS in total), successfully complete the thesis study courses they take during the dissertation period and successfully defend their theses.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Candidates who have graduated from the departments of English Language and Literature or equivalent departments (English Linguistics, English Translation and Interpreting, American Culture and Literature, English Language Teaching and Comparative Literature with a GPA of at least 2.75) of universities can apply to the master's program.

History

The Department of Western Languages and Literatures was established in 1994. English Language and Literature undergraduate program started to accept students in 2013-2014 academic year. Our language of instruction is 100% English. As of the 2023-2024 academic year, Master's degree program has started.

Profile of the Programme

The aim of the MA program in English Language and Literature is to train modern researchers and academics who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to serve in all areas of English Philology, who have internalized ethical values, who are aware of world realities and who have adopted the importance of lifelong learning. In this sense, the MA program in English Language and Literature will train scholars who can make studies in accordance with international standards in a contemporary, comparative and universal perspective by blending the theoretical background of disciplines such as sociology, psychology, history and philosophy with examples from fields such as Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature, especially English Language and Literature.

Program Outcomes

1- Have gained advanced knowledge of English Language, Literature and Culture.
2- Have obtained adequate knowledge of Literatures in English (USA, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Australia, etc.)
3- Have a postgraduate level knowledge of literary genres, concepts and terms and use this knowledge effectively.
4- Have theoretical and practical knowledge about the systematic structure, functioning and transformations of language.
5- Able to use literary, critical, historical and linguistic approaches in text analysis. Acquire the ability to conduct scientific research, evaluate sources and write academic articles at master's level.
6- Apply their knowledge of English literature and culture to other Western cultures and literatures in a comparative perspective.
7- Able to transfer the knowledge, communication skills, critical perspective and the diversity gained from culture and literature to other areas of life (teaching, counseling, translation, international relations, editorship, etc.).
8- Able to use analytical strategies through independent thinking process and evaluate the acquired knowledge in critical and creative processes to produce new ideas and projects.
9- Have a universal worldview that is conscious of language, religion, gender, cultural and sexual identities and diversities.
10- Able to use the acquired knowledge and skills with the awareness of professional and ethical responsibility and to develop the ability to act independently by taking initiative.

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from the Master's program in the Department of English Language and Literature, graduate students who enroll in the program are expected to have successfully completed the elective and compulsory courses available in the program (equivalent to a total of 120 ECTS) at the lesson stage of the process, and then to have completed the thesis process after submitting a thesis proposal related to the respective field.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of the Department of English Language and Literature can continue their careers in the academic field (Master's and PhD level) and carry on their scientific studies in the field under the umbrella of the university. In addition, there are job opportunities in various public institutions (TRT, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of National Education, etc.), publishing houses, magazines, literary and cultural journals, newspapers, film studios and international organizations, European Community and related institutions and projects. Graduates can improve their translation skills and work as interpreters and translators in areas with specific terminology such as medicine, architecture, economics, archaeology, automotive, law, etc. They also have the option to work in the tourism sector.

Access to Further Studies

Students who have completed their master's degree can study "doctorate" within the framework of the Council of Higher Education Graduate Education, Education Regulations and Graduate Education and Teaching Regulations of Universities.
