Practical Information for Exchange Students

Student Visa

A student visa is required to register as a student in Turkey. Students who come to Turkey without a student visa will not be able to register as a student nor will they get residence permits.

Student visas must be obtained from a Turkish Consulate, generally the one nearest your place of residence. Student visas cannot be obtained within Turkey. You must take, a copy of your “Acceptance Letter” and a completed visa application form to the Turkish consulate. They will provide you an application form upon request. The visa will be stamped in your passport.

Although a time limit will be stamped on your visa, the student visa will be valid as long as you are enrolled in school.

Note that rules seem to change regularly, so see www.e-konsolosluk.net and the Turkish Embassy or Consulate in your home country for the latest information about visa requirements.

Residence Permit

All international students, regardless of status, must register with, and obtain a Residence Permit (İkamet Belgesi) from the Foreign Relations Department at the Local Police Headquarters. This permit is required from the Directorate of Security in each province. Legally, international students must register within 30 days of their arrival and should keep their Residence Permit with them at all times. We will help you all through official procedures until you receive your residence permit.

Special students and exchange students are given residence permits for the period of time they will be studying in Turkey as indicated on the student visa.

Travel to Muğla

There are two International airports in Muğla Province; Dalaman and Bodrum. Turkish airlines and most International airlines may have direct flights, depending on the season and date, to Dalaman and Bodrum airports from the principal capitals and major cities of Europe. Flights to Dalaman and Bodrum via Istanbul are likely to be on a more frequent base.

Coaches and regular minibus services are always available from Dalaman and Bodrum to Mugla city centre

Many coach companies have regular daily schedules from Istanbul to Mugla city centre, for those opting to fly directly to Istanbul. The closest major cities to Mugla are Izmir and Antalya, to where direct flights from most capitals and major cities of Europe are also available. Please note that Istanbul is not close to Mugla by road.

Approximate distances by road

Istanbul-Muğla:                            786km                               Ankara-Muğla:                            624 km

Izmir-Muğla:                                 228km                               Dalaman-Muğla:                          86   km

Antalya-Muğla:                            311km                               Bodrum-Muğla:                           75   km

If you choose to arrive at Bodrum Airport or Dalaman Airport, we can arrange a pickup service for you with a certain price. For this, we need to contact some travel agencies and ask for the possibility. Please inform us about your arrival date and time, to arrange the booking for transfer.

Accommodation

We send you a list of some possible apartment houses you may stay during your academic period here. All these accommodation possibilities are in Akyaka, the beautiful coastal town on Gökova Bay, 25-30 minutes-drive from the campus. Prices in Akyaka are quite reasonable off tourist season. You can look at the list, make your search and try to contact the aparts you would like to stay. If you have any problem communicating or booking, please write to us and we will try to arrange your booking according to your wish, before your arrival.

Student ID Card

After your arrival we will issue for you Mugla Sıtkı Kocman University Student ID Cards. You will be able to use many campus facilities (library, computers, health centre, restaurants, sports, etc.) with same rights and responsibilities as our home students. We need your photo and your passport number for this. If you have not provided your passport number on your application form, please send it as soon as possible.

Living Expenses

Estimated living expenses for international students are approximately 350 € to 500 € per month. However, cost of living may depend on the city. Living cost in major big cities like Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir would be relatively higher than other smaller cities. However, away from the expensive cities and main tourism resorts, the day to day cost of living is quite affordable.

The average monthly wage in Turkey is not high when compared to the average in Europe, which means that correspondingly, basic essentials are reasonably affordable. Any fruit or vegetable in season is likely to be cheap across Turkey. Eating out in Turkey is also generally affordable. To eat cheaply and well go to restaurants frequented by local people or go to those serving local Turkish food.

Public transportation is convenient in all cities and relatively cheap. The inter-city transportation is also quite inexpensive and comfortable-international students may use the term breaks or other official holidays to explore the country.

The only things that may cost higher than many countries in Europe are international phone calls and petrol.

Transportation Communication and Banking

Scheduled municipal bus services, as well as private minibus services run continuously between the city centre and the main campus. Private minibuses also run between the Centre and the boroughs of Mugla, including Akyaka.

Students can make national and international calls using the payphones available around the campus and in the school buildings. Students can also purchase prepaid GSM phone cards for domestic communication. The campus post office is open during working hours on weekdays for all postal services.

Many national banks have their ATM services on campus for all banking transactions.
