Qualification Awarded

The Bacelor's Degree in English Language and Literature (first cycle in English Language and Literature) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements

The Department of English Language and Literature takes undergraduate students with the results of OSYM (TYT and YDT) exam. See for details, www.osym.gov.tr

Qualification Requirements

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the program (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

Recognition of Prior Learning

The rules and regulations for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. Transfer can be made among the institutions of which equivalency is recognized by Higher Education Council. Also successful vocational school graduates to continue their education to obtain Bachelor's degrees if they are successful in selection and the placement examination (DGS, i.e. vertical transfer examination) are admitted. The courses to be taken by these students are determined by the relevant department, on the basis of courses they have completed in the programs from which they have graduated. Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning is at the beginning stage in Turkish Higher Education Institutions. Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University and hence of the Department is not an exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each year at the University for the courses of English Language and Computer Skills. The students who have completed the proficiencies for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from those exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum.

History

The Western Languages and Literature department was founded in 1994. English Language and Literature graduate program has started to take students in 2013-2014 academic year.

Profile of the Programme

The department of English Language and Literature aims to educate philologists who have adopted ethical values, who are aware of the realities of the world, who have adopted the importance of life long learning, equipped with the knowledge, skills and approaches necessary to serve in all areas of English philology. The BA program consisting of a total of 8 semesters in 4 years, aims to provide students with an advanced level of language skills, core knowledge in literary terms, literary history, literary theory and criticism, culture, and vocational competence in language, literature, criticism, and cultural studies.

Program Outcomes

1- Demonstrates adequate knowledge of the historical development of the English language, literature, and culture.
2- Possesses advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of literary genres, concepts, terms, and periods, supported by up-to-date sources in the field of English Language and Literature.
3- Has knowledge of American Culture, Literature, and History, as well as Anglophone literatures (such as those of the United States, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Australia, etc.).
4- Is able to apply knowledge of major artistic movements in European cultural and civilizational history, including the Renaissance, Reformation, and Enlightenment, to textual analysis using literary, critical, historical, and linguistic approaches.
5- Acquires a sufficient level of knowledge in at least one other European language in addition to advanced proficiency in English.
6- Can transfer the knowledge and skills acquired in literary analysis and critical approaches to texts to various professional and social fields such as language education, teaching, translation, editing, and international relations.
7- Possesses theoretical and practical knowledge of the phonological, morphological, semantic, and etymological features of English, as well as the structure and functioning of the language.
8- Demonstrates accurate pronunciation of English vocabulary; produces competent translations by applying appropriate translation strategies to different text types, and applies acquired linguistic knowledge and skills with professional and ethical responsibility.
9- Can comparatively evaluate English literature and culture within the context of Western and Turkish cultures by drawing on related social science disciplines such as history, literature, art history, sociology, and philosophy.
10- Develops a critical, ethical perspective that is sensitive to cultural and social differences.
11- Is able to conduct scientific research at the undergraduate level; evaluates academic sources and produces written texts and delivers academic presentations.
12- Effectively uses information and communication technologies in academic research and production processes.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of English Language and Literature will find vocational opportunities in publishing houses, magazines, literary and cultural journals, newspapers, film studios, various public institutions (such as the Turkish Radio and Television Institution - TRT, the Foreign Office, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of National Education etc.), international institutions, as well as European Community, projects and institutions. Graduates can also focus on areas of translation that require specific terminology and specialize as translators and/or interpreters in fields such as medicine, economy, archaeology, automotive, and law. Job opportunities are also available in tourism. They can enter the teaching profession at public or independent schools after having gained a Teaching Certificate. Furthermore, graduates may pursue an academic career by taking up scientific study at universities (at Master's and Doctorate level).

Access to Further Studies

The graduates holding Bachelor's Degree are eligible to apply to Master's Degree programs at national level and/or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.

Mode of Study

The aim of the English Language and Literature Program is to educate individuals with a strong theoretical and practical foundation in English language, literature, and culture, equipped with advanced language competence and well-developed critical and research skills. The program fosters the ability to interpret literary and cultural texts through interdisciplinary perspectives and to apply acquired knowledge and skills effectively in academic, cultural, and professional contexts. It further aims to graduate culturally aware, ethically responsible, creative, and lifelong-learning individuals who are able to contribute meaningfully to diverse fields as contemporary philologists.
