Specific Admission Requirements

Candidates for application to PhD program must; a) have a master's degree from Turkish or foreign faculties or colleges approved by the Turkish Council of Higher Education, b) have at least 55 points from the entry exam for academic personal and graduate program (ALES) or any other exam equivalent and accepted by the Interuniversity Council, c) At least 55 points from the foreign language exam (YDS).

Qualification Requirements

In order to achieve sufficiency in the program, students must successfully complete all the courses (Z/S) enrolled in the program (120 ECTS credits), pass the thesis study and the courses they have taken during the thesis period and successfully defend their theses, as minimum qualification criteria for the program.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Candidates who have graduated from the archeology departments of the universities can apply to the PhD program. Issues in relation to the lateral transfer are based on the 8th Article of the Regulation on Graduate Education.

History

Our department was established in 1993 with the name of the Department of Archeology and Art History so to include the disciplines of Archaeology and Art History within the Faculty of Science and Letters. Graduate education is being provided since 1996. In teh academic year of 2005-2006 our department started to provide undergraduate education. The doctoral education is provided since 2012.

Profile of the Programme

Through the PhD program our department aims to make the students sepacialists in their profession as archaeologists and in the meantime, to teach the ancient civilizations, especially from Anatolia, together with all cultural elements, to enable them making sense of artistic and intellectual creations, and to teach analytically interpret the connection between past and present within the context of cause and effect.

Program Outcomes

1- The students will sufficiently define, comment on and date the archaeological material. They will gain a multifaceted perspective on correlating the past and the future.
2- They will gain a life-long learning habit using their knowledge and ability in Archaeology
3- They will have ability on commenting on the material of ancient architecture, pottery and sculpture, which form the basis of the modern archaeology education.
4- They can do documentation using classical methods and advanced technology. They can make it utilizable for the other fields.
5- They can research and comment about Ionian Archaeology, Chronology Problems of Aegean and Western Anatolia and Carian Periphery
6- They can analysis the data from Aeolis and Eastern Mediterranean with analogical method
7- They can analysis and comment the cult places of Caria and Mediterranean, Ancient Defense systems. They can explain this datas in exams and seminars
8- They can compare and comment about Carian Culture and its periphery in Lelegian period.
9- They can comment with the datas from Christian relic cults and its architecture

Exam Regulations & Assesment & Grading

Student are evaluated and graded according to 11th article of the Regulation on Graduate Education at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University. The examination is performed as mid-term, final and make-up exams. In order for the student to take the final exam he/she must have attended at least 70% of the theoretical courses. The examimation is performed in written, oral, written-applied and oral-applied methods. For each course, at least one midterm exam is held in the related semester. In order to be successful in a course, the final grade must be at least CB.

Graduation Requirements

The normal duration of the program is 4 years. In order to graduate from the PhD program, student are required to complete at least seven courses, one seminar and one thesis study. The course on specialized field, seminar and the thesis study are courses with credit and are graded as successful (GG) or unsuccessful (KK). The student who succeed chooses the thesis advisor. Afterwards, the student writes his/her thesis in accordance with the “Thesis Writing Guide” and submits at least one printed and one electronical copy at least one month before the date of the thesis defense. The student who successfully passed the thesis defense is entitled to graduate.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Employment Opportunities for the Graduates: the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Monuments and Museums, Conservation Board Directorates, State Museums, Private Museums, specialist, consultant or researcher in institutions like DÖSİM, researcher in universities.

Access to Further Studies

There is no other educational program higher than Phd.
