Urban and Regional Planner

Specific Admission Requirements

Department of City and Regional Planning accepts students based on the numerical score of the Higher Education Institutions' Exam (YKS) conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM).

Qualification Requirements

Students are expected to successfully complete Urban and Regional Planning Undergraduate Program with a course load of 240.0 ECTS for graduation.

History

Since 2019-2020 Academic Year, Department of City and Regional Planning has started student admission. Education in the department is conducted in English (at least 30%); hence, one-year language prep school is must for student. Department consists of three sections; Regional Planning, Urban Design and City Planning.

Profile of the Programme

62 undergraduate students are admitted to our program for each academic year.

Program Outcomes

1- Adequate knowledge of theory, principles, methods, and policies associated with the city and regional planning; ability to use these theoretical and applied bits of knowledge in planning processes
2- Acquire the knowledge of the social, economic, legal, physical, and sectoral dimensions of the city and regional planning practice, current issues, and their global and local effects; ability to use this knowledge in these areas to prepare spatial development plans
3- Ability to use scientific, strategic, creative and problem-based thinking knowledge and benefit in planning processes
4- Ability to distinguish and define complex planning problems at city, regional and sectoral level; the ability to select and apply appropriate analysis methods and planning tools to articulate such problems, and the ability to make predictions and develop planning proposals and strategies for the development and needs of cities
5- Ability to work individually and take initiative
6- The ability to know at least one foreign language fluently will be sufficient to easily follow the literature and developments in the field of city and regional planning and to communicate effectively with colleagues in international projects
7- Ability to work effectively within a team and to cooperate and take responsibility in professional and interdisciplinary teams
8- Ability to design, select and use modern technics and computing tools required in city and regional planning processes; the ability to use information and communication technologies, as well as the software and hardware knowledge needed for the discipline of city and regional planning
9- Ability to make effective oral, written and visual presentations in the field of city and regional planning
10- Awareness of the need for life-long learning; ability to access information and to follow the developments in science and technology, and to maintain personal development
11- Awareness of professional and ethical responsibility and their legal consequences
12- Awareness of the environmental consequences of planning projects and policies; understanding of innovative and sustainable planning solutions, occupational safety and health and their legal implications
13- Ability to effectively search databases and other sources of information; being able to find and effectively extract the necessary information from literature and other sources; ability to analyze collected data, synthesize various information and ideas, and interpret findings; and the ability to use them in the city and regional planning processes, to determine the needs of the user for a design project, to prepare a needs program and to interpret this needs program in ways that will create value for the individual and the public, to establish organizational relations between the agents and factors involved in the design process, and ability to develop practical solutions to problems
14- Comprehend the principles related to the protection and evaluation of the tangible and intangible heritage
15- Understanding the basics of office organization, business planning, project management, risk management, and leadership, city economy and cost management, as well as being conscious of planning offices and practices, employee health, environment, and work safety
16- Consciously own the principles and reforms of Atatürk, being aware of the historical roots of the Turkish Revolution, to discuss the researches and implementations during the different periods of the Republic of Turkey in the context of City and Regional Planning

Exam Regulations & Assesment & Grading

The method of measurement and evaluation applied for each course is defined under the Course Teaching Plan following Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from the Department of City and Regional Planning, after a one-year compulsory English preparatory program, students have to complete the following courses successfully, and the number of credits given in the undergraduate program (156 local credits and 240 ECTS), and also CRP 3000 (Office Internship) has to been accepted.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Thanks to the comprehensive and multidimensional education of the Department of City and Regional Planning, our graduates have the opportunity to work in various positions in the public and private sectors. They have the chance to be employed as an urban planner and expert in many central government institutions, especially the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, as a civil servant or with a contract. In addition, they can work in municipalities (local government) and private planning offices where planning studies are actively carried out. Real estate appraisal firms and also for the ones want to continue their academic life universities are the main employment opportunities.

Access to Further Studies

Candidates who have completed their undergraduate education can start their graduate education if they have sufficient scores in the Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES) and Foreign Language Exam (YDS) and are successful in the graduate science exam.
