Mode of Study
Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Fethiye Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Horticulture was established in 2015. The Department of Horticulture is active in both undergraduate and Postgraduate education (Master's). It is a department that is in high demand for undergraduate and graduate education and has a high number of applications.
It is a necessity in our country, as in the world, to benefit from the science of Horticulture and the advances in this field in solving the problems encountered in agricultural production and sustainability in agriculture. While the world population is increasing rapidly, agricultural areas are gradually shrinking. Traditional agricultural technologies, rapidly increasing human population and increasingly changing environmental conditions that become unfavorable for agricultural production negatively affect the sustainability of production.
In 2020, a total of 10 billion 387 million 435 TL was contributed to the Turkish Economy from Muğla agriculture. The number of farmers registered with the Chambers of Agriculture is approximately 70,000 and has a significant ratio to the provincial population. 229,433.45 hectares of Muğla Agricultural area; 115,864.3 hectares of it consists of fruit area, 78,458.4 hectares of field area, 19,088.4 hectares of vegetable area and 4,265 hectares of greenhouse area. Horticulture constitutes 65.94% of the agricultural area of our province. In terms of production potential, Muğla Province has olive, almond, citrus, pomegranate, greenhouse tomato, open field kidney beans, black-eyed peas, etc. It is among the top five provinces in our country with its products. According to statistical data, our province has the largest citrus and almond area in the Aegean Region. The number of olive trees in the province constitutes approximately 14% of our country's olive assets. 40% of the manufacturing companies in our city operate in the food and agriculture-based industrial sectors. The total number of companies engaged in agriculture-based manufacturing is 238, and 16 of them export. Our province ranks 4th in our country and 1st in the Aegean region in terms of greenhouse production area, and agriculture is an important source of income, especially in Fethiye District. Considering the vegetable, fruit growing, ornamental plants and viticulture potential of our region, the Department of Horticulture will make great contributions to cultivation, and one of our most important goals is to introduce the region's agricultural production and related business lines, industry and the use of new technologies.
